Home Based Medicaid and Spousal Income Allowance

HNWApplying for Medicaid Long Term Care Benefits

middle aged coupleI read a recent post online about a married client applying for Medicaid at home. He needs a qualified income trust (QIT) because his income is over $5,000 per month.

His wife’s income is only $967. In 2026 a Medicaid applicant is allowed to keep $2,901 for living expenses. The question raised was whether his wife is entitled to a portion of her husband’s excess income to pay for care and support and other permitted expenses. The short answer yes; a spouse is entitled to the full 100% value of her minimum monthly living allowances at home just as if her spouse was applying for Medicaid in a nursing home.
